To be completely fair, I should mention that values are ideals, and are more easily held than lived up to. Christians have problems getting along and living up to their ideals the same as others (that's what that whole business with Jesus dying for our sins was about). But, at least they are values.

He has a point about the group thing. We agree on very little. And it is a topic that we revisit often. One thing that comes up is the early socialization of church groups for their kids. Atheists don't have the same kind of bible study and church events in which those group values are instilled in children, most of us don't bring our kids to atheist meetings partly out of consideration for them. They mostly would get bored by our discussions because the issue isn't relevant for them as of yet.

A great many atheists refuse to join atheist groups because they don't like the idea of a "herd mentality" that can develop. You should have seen all of the arguments in the atheist blogospere about something as simple as whether or not displaying the Scarlet "A" on our blog was succumbing to a group mentality.

But polls are easily manipulated, however I am sure he worked pretty hard to correct for biases. Social sciences are the toughest to quantify because of the self-reporting factor, and it is hard to design questionnaires which correct for internal validity (are the answers consistent with each other.)

Larry Craig, I am sure would self-report in direct contrast his answers, as would David Vitter and Ted Haggard. Don't you think?

Apparently, atheism means never having to say you’re sorry.

I have to say it. I'm sorry. Except the Canadians pronounce it funny "soar-y."

I think it's kind of a weird study, considering it doesn't square with the atheist crowd I run with. But then, I run mostly with American Atheists. Well, not run so much as kvetch with. About theists.

I should probably stop before I dig a hole.
